You can upgrade to macOS High Sierra from OS X Mountain Lion or later on any of the following Mac models. Your Mac also needs at least 2GB of memory and 14.3GB of available storage space.

The App Store does not allow you to download an OS older than the one your mac came pre installed with. Unfortunately the App Store does not factor in that you may not want to install this OS on your mac but be downloading it so you can create a bootable USB for use on another mac.

To find your Mac model, memory, storage space, and macOS version, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu . If your Mac isn't compatible with macOS High Sierra, the installer will let you know.

  • I have a MacBook Pro running El Capitan that I need to upgrade to Sierra 10.12 (not High Sierra) for development reasons. I have previously upgraded my personal computer as follows: El Capitan - Sierra - High Sierra. Knowing that, I should be able to see the previous version in the App Store.

It can also create a bootable USB for you. I’ve had to use this on a few occasions in order to re-download High Sierra while on the Mojave beta.
